A Look Inside

The Little Compton Village Improvement Society (LCVIS) is a long-standing community nonprofit organization in Little Compton, Rhode Island dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for local residents and supporting community well-being.

Nonprofit Status:
LCVIS is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, meaning contributions are generally tax-deductible and it operates for public charitable purposes.

History:
The society was founded in 1913 with the purpose of working “for the general welfare of all the townspeople of Little Compton.” Early efforts focused on stimulating community development, improving local amenities, and offering educational and social opportunities — helping the town grow in ways that reflected its character and values.

Mission & Activities:
The mission of the LCVIS is to promote and support charitable, educational, and social activities within the Little Compton community and serve as a community gathering place and support local civic engagement. It accomplishes this through programs, events, and stewardship of community spaces.

Brownell House:
The society’s headquarters is the Brownell House, a historic building that was placed in trust to the society in 1915. Brownell House functions as a venue for meetings, classes, lectures, clubs, and other community uses, essentially serving as a civic and cultural hub for Little Compton.
